Beyond the Premiere II: workshop with Ken Cameron

April 9, 2014 | MAP News

Ken Cameron leads a hands-on workshop on getting that coveted second (or third) production.

April 9th, 2014 from 7-9 pm in the Rory Runnells Studio (#504-100 Arthur St.)

Ken Cameron is a Calgary-based playwright and all-around arts administrator. Ken is the author of more than fifteen plays, including Harvest, which has been in continual production around Canada, and is receiving its 18th production at Prairie Theatre Exchange, making it (possibly) the most frequently produced Alberta play of the past decade. His musician Dear Johnny Deere will close Theatre Calgary's season, one of very few Canadian plays that the theatre has presented in the past thirty years.

How on earth did this happen?

Find out. More importantly, find out how to make it work for you.

In 2012 Ken lead his Beyond The Premiere in Winnipeg. This follow-up workshop reviews those principles briefly and gives participants a hand-on workshop in which they will receive one-on-one coaching and an opportunity to develop a customized elevator pitch, synopsis and cover letter that appeals directly to the hearts, mind and pocketbooks of Artistic Directors.

Note: Ken says "Beyond The Premiere I is not a pre-requisite. Its not College. You can come anyway."

Participants will be asked to submit the following information one week prior to the workshop*:

  • 1. A one-page Plot Synopsis of their play
  • 2. Its current stage of development
  • 3. Outreach or Promotion efforts taken to date

* Ken says "don't work too hard - it can all be point form - this is just to give me a place to start from".

Cost: $25 MAP members/$30 non-members, register on line mbplay@mymts.net, or at the office. Due to demand, we may have to limit attendance.

Participants with extra time on their hands may wish to read Ken's introduction to the Playwrights Guild publication Working with Theatres: A Guide for Playwrights.
