Presenting the next generation of Manitoba Playwrights!

At 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 7th and Friday, June 8th, 2018, at the Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre, the Scirocco Drama Manitoba High School Playwriting Competition will present five hilarious, touching, exciting and thought-provoking new short plays written by teenagers, directed by professionals, and performed by a cast of all ages.

Each year the Manitoba Association of Playwrights and Scirocco Drama invite high school students from across the province to submit short plays for the Annual High School Playwriting Competition. A panel of theatre professionals selects five finalists. The finalists then work on their scripts with a dramaturg, directors are hired, actors are cast, and the plays are rehearsed and staged for two nights of presentations at the Royal MTC Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre.

This year, we have five young women sharing stories about struggles with body image, pirates squaring off with a god, a world enslaved by popular opinion, a job interview that exposes how small the world really is, and a chance encounter of strangers in a coffee shop that may change the world, or at least their part of it.

How does it work? All five short plays (15 - 20 minutes each) are performed on both nights. Votes from the audience are taken each night to decide on the winner of the Cora McKenzie Award (The votes are tallied and the winner announced on the second night of presentations).  Cash prizes are also awarded to the other four finalists.

This year’s finalists are:
Pressure Cooker by Ryleigh Anderson, St. Mary’s Academy
Setting Sail by Anna Gervais, Portage Collegiate Institute
Letting Go by Feruz Habteselassi, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate
In Through the Window by Aurora R. Wiebe, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate
Sleepy Town by Mona Zorigoo, Kelvin High School
